Family Words: Free Printable Word Cards for PreK Writing Centers
Give a four-year-old a reason to write to Mom, Dad, Grandma, a brother, or a sister, and suddenly the pencil has a job.
Young children are much more willing to experiment with writing when the words mean something to them. Family names are some of the most meaningful words they know, and they naturally lend themselves to birthday cards, “I love you” notes, drawings, pretend mail, and little stories about home.
That’s why we created this free Family Words set for preschool and PreK writing centers.
The set includes 25 family words and useful phrases, each paired with friendly pictures of diverse families.
You’ll find common family words such as Mom, Dad, Baby, Brother, Sister, Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt, Uncle, Cousin, and Family, along with familiar names children may use at home, including Mommy, Daddy, Mimi, Nana, Pap, and Granddad. Spanish family words include Abuela, Abuelo, Tía, and Tío.
We also included short phrases children can use when making cards and notes:
I love you • Happy Birthday • Thank You • Big hug • For You
Four formats for every word
Each word comes in four formats so the same vocabulary can be used in different parts of the classroom:
a long picture-and-word strip for a bulletin board or word wall
a smaller picture-and-word card for the writing table
a word-only card for children who are beginning to recognize familiar print
a picture-only card for matching, sorting, conversation, and storytelling
The smaller table cards are especially handy because children can pick one up, bring it to their workspace, and copy the word without having to keep looking across the room.
Why family words work so well in a writing center
Family words give beginning writers something worth writing about.
A child may not be ready to compose a sentence independently, but they may be very ready to make a card for Grandma, write the first letter in Mom, copy Dad, or add I love you to a picture.
That kind of writing still matters.
Scribbles, letter-like forms, a single recognizable letter, copied words, and invented spelling are all part of the path toward conventional writing. The picture cues also help children remember what a word says and “read back” their own work later.
A blank set for the names children actually use
Every family has its own vocabulary.
One child may have a Grandma, another a Gigi, Lola, Bubbe, Nana, or a completely different name that only makes sense inside that family.
So the download also includes blank versions of the cards. The pictures and layouts stay the same, but the word space is left empty so teachers can add the names children really use at home.
That keeps the set useful without trying to predict every possible family name.
A simple way to prepare the center is to send a quick note home asking families what children call important family members. Then add those names to the blank cards together.
Setting up the writing center
The center does not need to be complicated.
Post the larger Family Words cards where children can see them, and keep the smaller cards within reach at the writing table. Add pencils, crayons, markers, plain paper, folded cards, envelopes, stickers, and a few blank note cards.
Then let the materials do some of the invitation.
Children might:
make a birthday card
write a note to someone at home
draw their family and add names
copy a family word onto an envelope
make a “For You” card
match picture cards to word cards
choose a word card and use it in a drawing or story
A word wall is most useful when children actually use it, not when it becomes classroom wallpaper. Point to the cards during shared writing, model how to find a word, and encourage children to bring a card back to the table when they need it.
Make room for every stage of writing
Not every child will use these cards in the same way.
One child may copy Mom perfectly. Another may write M. Another may make marks and tell you, “This says Grandma.”
All of those children are writing.
The goal is not perfect copying. The goal is helping children understand that print carries meaning and that they can use writing to communicate with real people.
